How to Think Inside the Box


How many times do we hear this mantra - "think outside the box?" Sometimes from people who do not even know what it means to think. The truth is that we cannot think outside the box, outside our minds. All our ideas, however novel and strikingly original, come from inside our minds, as products of parceling and recombining things we have already learned.
This process of slicing up what we have known into smaller pieces of experience and then combining these smaller pieces in unusual ways is all that is needed and possible for innovation. Taking the experience of a single head horn and combining it with one of a slender horse gave us the unforgettable likeness of a unicorn.
